How to ask someone to reply to your text

A missing reply could mean a few different things. Their phone buried your message under notifications and they just forgot. Their life got busy, and they're not in the headspace to respond to anyone right now. Or they saw it, weren't sure how to respond, and now too much time has passed so it feels awkward to answer. Very rarely does silence mean they're not interested. If someone wants nothing to do with you, they might say so. More often they just don't reply, which is different. The silence is ambiguous. That's actually good news for you. It means a light, low-pressure follow-up often works. They're not ghosting because they hate you. They're just stuck or distracted. Your job is to unstick them without making it feel like a demand.

A good follow-up does two things. First, it reminds them you sent something without implying they were rude for not answering. This means avoiding anything that sounds like you're pointing out their silence. Don't say 'you never responded' or 'guess you're busy'. Instead, write something that could have been sent at any time. Something fresh. Second, it gives them a reason to reply that doesn't involve them explaining themselves. A new question, a funny observation, or a specific detail about something you want to do. If your follow-up is just 'hey, you there?', it puts the burden on them to generate conversation. They have to come up with something to say. But if you add a new thread or ask something concrete, they can simply answer it. You've made responding easier than not replying.

Wait at least three to five days before you follow up. If you message again after one day, you look impatient. Three days gives real time for life to happen. Send it at a normal time when people tend to look at their phones, not late at night or early morning. After you send a solid follow-up, give them another three to five days. If there's still nothing, accept it. Two unanswered messages is the limit. A third one crosses into territory where you're messaging someone who is not interested in messaging you back, and that's not going to change. You've shown interest twice. You've given them chances. After that, move your attention elsewhere. There are people who will reply to you.
